About Woodgrain Paintings
As a wood enthusiast, I choose to preserve the memory of tree ring designs by documenting as many of their portraits as I can.
Paint is brushed onto canvas or linen where it becomes a showcase for the beauty of the oil paint; smooth to the touch, yet 3-dimensional in appearance.
Pleasurable incongruities are presented when one Woodgrain Painting is placed in contiguous alignment with another painting. Installation configuration greatly alters effect - each variation counterpoised against its partner. (I carry my soothing surrounds from room to room as I need them.) They tell their stories which I exaggerate with color.
Tree genus, angle of cut, size, color, diptych and triptych partners all enter into the stream of what makes for an aesthetic ensemble. Woodgrain Paintings draw viewers inside, where they focus and relax into the familiar and contemplative surrounds.
When I am creating my art, what matters most to me is the process, the technique, the integrity of the materials used to create the piece.
